lichess • Free Online Chess

Chess apps often make a simple promise: open the board, find an opponent, and play. lichess feels more serious than that, but it also avoids turning the game into a noisy shopping experience. I found it most appealing as a focused place to play, study, and review chess without paying for access. It is a free board game from lichess.org mobile 1, available for Android, and its open-source identity is important because the whole experience is built around chess rather than a large collection of unrelated extras.

That focus makes it a good fit for someone who already knows the basic rules and wants a dependable chess home on a phone. It can also suit a beginner who is willing to learn by exploring, although the number of choices may feel less welcoming than a very guided teaching app. In my experience, its biggest strength is control: I can choose how I want to play and spend as much time as I want examining a position. Its biggest weakness is the same thing: newcomers may need patience before the interface and chess vocabulary feel natural.

How lichess works for different players and situations

I look at how lichess fits different kinds of players and everyday situations, from a quick offline practice session to a more deliberate review after a game. A useful way to get more from it is to decide what you want the session to teach you before opening the board; that keeps its many possibilities manageable.

Readability and navigation on a small screen

The board is naturally the center of attention, which is exactly what I want during a game. Pieces and squares need to be read quickly, and the uncluttered chess-first presentation helps me keep my eyes on the position. Menus lead to the parts of the service that matter to a player, such as playing, studying, and looking back at games, rather than distracting me with unrelated content.

That does not mean every screen is instantly obvious. Chess has its own language, and a new player may not immediately understand the difference between a casual game, a timed game, analysis, or a study. I would recommend opening the app when you are not in a hurry and tapping through the available areas before starting an important match. That small orientation period makes the experience much less intimidating.

For a returning player, navigation becomes easier because the main question is usually clear: do I want to play now, inspect a previous game, or work through a position? The app rewards that intentional approach. I would not describe it as a cheerful, guided lesson plan that constantly tells you what to do next. Instead, it gives you a chess workspace and expects you to decide how to use it.

One useful habit is to review a game immediately after finishing it, while the critical moments are still fresh. Rather than only checking who won, I look for the first move where my plan stopped making sense. That turns a quick phone match into a short training session. The review process is more valuable when I write down what I thought during the game before looking for an explanation, because the contrast between my intention and the position often reveals the real mistake.

The app has a 4.0 average from around 168 thousand ratings, which suggests a broad audience has found it useful while also leaving room for different opinions about the interface. I would not choose it solely because of that number. Chess applications are very personal: one player wants a calm board and deep control, while another wants animated lessons, rewards, and constant encouragement. lichess leans strongly toward the first group.

Motor and sensory considerations during play

Chess is slower than an action game, but it still demands accurate touch. Selecting a piece and its destination can be uncomfortable for someone with limited precision, hand tremors, or difficulty using small touch targets. A rushed time control makes that problem more noticeable because a player may know the correct move and still struggle to enter it cleanly. I found that longer games are the safer choice when touch accuracy or fatigue is a concern.

There is also a practical difference between playing on a phone and playing on a larger screen. A phone is convenient, but the board occupies less physical space and leaves less room for comfortably inspecting details. If I am studying a complicated position, I prefer a larger display or a relaxed setting rather than trying to analyze while standing on public transport. The app’s portability is a strength, but portability should not be confused with ideal visibility in every environment.

For players sensitive to visual clutter, the chess-first layout can be easier to tolerate than an app packed with banners, animated rewards, or competing panels. At the same time, a dense position remains visually demanding. Eight ranks, eight files, piece shapes, colors, and move history all carry information. I would test the board in the display settings available on the device and choose a theme that gives strong contrast without making the pieces blend into the squares.

Color alone should never be the only clue I rely on when reading a position. I pay attention to the piece shapes, square coordinates, and move notation as separate sources of information. That is particularly useful for players who do not distinguish every color easily or who are playing under uneven lighting. A board that looks attractive in a bright room may be harder to read in bed or outdoors, so I consider the environment before blaming myself for missing a tactical detail.

Sound is not central to the way I use the app. That makes it suitable for quiet places, but it also means the player should not expect audio guidance to carry the experience. If you need strong spoken instruction, rich narration, or a lesson that explains every move aloud, a dedicated teaching product may be a better companion. lichess is primarily a visual and interactive chess tool, not a substitute for every form of accessible instruction.

Situational access: offline moments, travel, and short breaks

One of the most useful parts of the experience is that it supports both online and offline chess. I value that distinction when I am travelling, waiting somewhere with unreliable reception, or trying to spend a few minutes away from notifications. An offline game gives me a way to practice without depending on a live opponent or a stable connection, while online play is there when I want the pressure and unpredictability of another person.

A realistic everyday use case is a commute with inconsistent signal. I can use the time for a quiet game or position work instead of beginning a match that might be interrupted. I would still avoid starting a serious online game when I know I may lose connectivity or need to put the phone away suddenly. Chess clocks punish interruptions, even when the interruption is not the player’s fault from a practical point of view.

The same flexibility helps parents, students, and workers who do not have a predictable schedule. A short practice session can focus on one position rather than a complete match. Someone who has only a few minutes should choose a task with a clear stopping point, because an unfinished live game is a poor fit for a sudden appointment. I like that the app can fit around my day, but it does not remove the need to choose the right kind of chess for the time available.

It is also a sensible choice for people who want to avoid a subscription decision before they know whether they will keep playing. The price is free, and the app has passed ten million installs, so it is not an obscure experiment that I would hesitate to recommend to a friend. Still, free access does not automatically make the learning curve disappear. The value comes from using the tools deliberately, not from merely installing it.

The age rating is Everyone, which makes the app broadly suitable for families from a content standpoint. I would still guide a young or completely new player through the first sessions, especially around online play and the difference between a friendly game and a competitive timed game. The board itself is easy to understand; the social and competitive parts of chess require more judgment than moving pieces.

What advanced users can do with the same board

My favorite workflow is to separate playing from learning. After a game, I first reconstruct the key moment without immediately asking for a computer judgment. I try to identify the candidate moves I considered, then compare them with what the position required. Only after that do I use analysis to test my understanding. This prevents the familiar mistake of memorizing a suggested move without learning why my original idea failed.

Another useful approach is to study positions in small portions. Instead of opening a long collection and passively scrolling through it, I stop before a critical move and predict what should happen. I then make a note of the reason: king safety, a loose piece, a pawn break, or an endgame transition. This makes the app more useful for deliberate practice and less like a place where I simply consume finished games.

Players who already have a personal opening repertoire can use the app as a place to test ideas against real decisions rather than only reading theory. I would not treat a single result as proof that an opening is good or bad. The more useful question is whether I repeatedly reach positions I understand. That is a subtle but important trade-off: a familiar position may be better for improvement than a fashionable line I cannot explain.

For a beginner, I suggest starting with slower games and reviewing only one or two turning points. Looking at every move can become exhausting and may hide the main lesson. A newer player usually gains more from asking, “What was attacked, and what did I fail to notice?” than from trying to understand a long sequence of perfect responses. The app can support that habit, but the player has to bring the questions.

Remaining barriers and where another app may fit better

The open-source, chess-focused character will appeal to independent learners, but it may feel austere to someone who expects a polished course with a clear daily path. If your main goal is guided instruction for absolute beginners, a lesson-centered chess app may be easier during the first week. Such an alternative can reduce decision fatigue by presenting one exercise at a time. I would choose lichess when I want freedom and depth, not when I want the app to plan all my learning for me.

Live play can also create pressure that is unrelated to chess skill. A player with attention difficulties, anxiety, or an unpredictable routine may find the clock and online expectations stressful. The answer is not necessarily to abandon the app; it may be to use offline play, longer time controls, or analysis instead. But if you want a purely relaxed puzzle experience with no opponent, no clock, and no need to manage a game session, another type of chess app may be more comfortable.

Navigation is another possible barrier. The app offers enough depth that a first-time user can feel unsure about where to begin. I would not hand it to a child or a non-player and assume the experience will explain itself perfectly. A few minutes of shared exploration can make a major difference: show how to start a game, how to leave a position safely, and how to review a finished match without rushing.

Device conditions matter too. Small screens, glare, poor contrast, and unstable internet can all change the experience. These are not reasons to dismiss the app, but they are reasons to choose the context carefully. I get the best results with a clean screen, enough battery, a stable surface, and a time control that matches how long I can realistically stay focused.

The current version is 8.0.0 and it requires Android 5.1 or later. That makes it accessible to many older Android devices, although the practical experience will still depend on the phone’s screen, performance, and input comfort. I would check those everyday factors before assuming that a technically compatible device will be pleasant for long analysis sessions.

My inclusive verdict after using it

I recommend lichess to players who want free online and offline chess, a serious board, and room to improve without being pushed toward purchases. It is particularly good for someone who enjoys learning independently, reviewing mistakes, and switching between a quick practice session and a deeper study session. The developer, lichess.org mobile 1, has produced a game that feels designed for people who want chess itself to remain the main event.

My recommendation is more cautious for complete beginners who need constant explanation, players who depend on spoken guidance, and anyone who finds small touch targets or timed play frustrating. Those users may prefer a more guided or accessibility-focused alternative, at least at first. That is not a criticism of the chess content; it is a reminder that a strong chess workspace is not automatically the easiest teaching environment for every ability or situation.

For me, the deciding advantage is the combination of flexibility and seriousness. I can play when connected, practice when disconnected, and turn a finished game into a lesson instead of letting it disappear. The trade-off is that I must manage my own path and adapt the board, time control, and setting to my needs. If that sounds appealing, this is one of the rare free games I would install with the expectation of keeping it for the long term.

My bottom line: choose it for focused, flexible chess and self-directed improvement; skip it only if you need a heavily guided course, rich audio instruction, or a completely pressure-free puzzle experience. For everyone else, it is a capable and unusually generous way to keep a real chessboard close at hand.
