Nextbots In Backrooms: Shooter

I went into Nextbots In Backrooms: Shooter expecting a quick horror-action game, and that is exactly where it makes the most sense. It turns the familiar backrooms idea into a chase-focused shooter in which the pressure comes from being pursued, finding room to move, and deciding when to fight rather than simply exploring at your own pace. The result is easy to understand within moments, but it can still become tense when several demands arrive at once.

This is an Android action game from HOOKAH GAMES, available free to start, with optional purchases ranging from $0.99 to $99.99 per item. It carries a Teen content rating, so I would not treat it as a suitable choice for very young children simply because the controls are accessible. The game has attracted over 10 million installs and holds a 4.2 average from around 50 thousand ratings, which suggests that its straightforward horror-shooter format has found a sizeable audience.

How the chase feels in ordinary play

The strongest part of the experience is its immediate pace. You do not need a long explanation to understand the basic appeal: move through unsettling spaces, keep away from threatening pursuers, and use shooting when it helps you survive. That direct setup is useful when I want a short session rather than a large role-playing game with inventories, character builds, or a lengthy story to remember.

The speed is not only about how quickly the character moves. It also comes from the way the game keeps attention on what may be behind you. A quiet stretch can feel temporary because the next threat changes the value of every corridor and open area. I found that this creates a different kind of tension from a conventional action game. In a normal shooter, I often look for the best angle to attack. Here, I also think about escape routes before I commit to a fight.

That makes the game particularly suitable for short breaks. If I have only a few minutes, I can get into the mood quickly without first completing a tutorial-heavy introduction. It also works for players who enjoy horror as an active challenge rather than as a passive story. The backrooms setting provides the atmosphere, while the chase gives the session its purpose.

There is a trade-off, though. Players who prefer careful exploration, deep narrative, or tactical planning may find the repeated pressure less satisfying than a slower horror adventure. The central idea is deliberately narrow. Its value comes from how enjoyable you find being hunted and reacting under pressure, not from offering a broad collection of unrelated activities.

Why movement matters more than reckless shooting

My most useful adjustment was to stop treating the weapon as the complete solution. Shooting can feel reassuring, but panic makes it harder to judge distance and direction. I get better results when I first identify where I can turn, where I might become trapped, and whether moving is safer than standing still to attack.

This is one of the less obvious strengths of the design: the game encourages spatial memory without presenting itself as a puzzle game. After passing through an area, I start remembering which paths feel open and which corners are dangerous. That knowledge becomes valuable during a chase, especially when I am tempted to run toward the first visible opening.

I also recommend using the first moments of a session to learn the control response instead of immediately trying to play aggressively. On a touchscreen, small changes in aim or movement can matter more than expected during a pursuit. A player who takes a moment to become comfortable with turning and firing will usually feel less overwhelmed than someone who treats every encounter as a target-practice exercise.

What happens when the screen gets busy

The most demanding moments are the ones in which movement, aiming, fear, and route selection happen together. A chase can make a simple action feel complicated because I am not only asking where the threat is; I am also deciding whether the next turn will give me space or remove it. That mental load is part of the fun, but it explains why the game can feel much more intense than its basic controls suggest.

Heavy-use sessions are also the moments when I pay closest attention to the phone itself. A horror game loses some of its effect if the display becomes difficult to read, the device is uncomfortable to hold, or the player has to stop repeatedly to recover from a mistake. I prefer playing with enough battery and a comfortable grip, especially because a tense chase encourages firmer, less relaxed hand movements.

One practical habit helps: I avoid beginning a serious attempt while multitasking. Notifications, floating controls, or a sudden switch to another app are especially disruptive when the game depends on maintaining awareness of a pursuer. This is not a special feature of the title, but it is a real use-case difference between playing casually in a quiet room and trying to enjoy it during a crowded commute.

The game is also better suited to active attention than background play. I would not start it while listening to a podcast that requires concentration or while expecting frequent interruptions. The experience depends on reacting to what is happening now, so a player who has only half a mind available may interpret the difficulty as unfair when the real problem is divided attention.

Stability and recovering after a bad attempt

What I like about this format is that failure does not need to ruin the whole evening. A chase-based session can be approached as a quick attempt: learn what went wrong, change the route or timing, and try again. That recovery loop is more welcoming than a game that asks me to replay a long story section after every mistake.

My advice after a failed run is to identify one cause rather than blaming everything at once. If I lost control because I turned too sharply, the next attempt should focus on smoother movement. If I was cornered because I ignored the surrounding space, I should watch the route earlier. Treating each failure as one small lesson makes the horror pressure feel manageable and gives the action more depth than simply rushing forward.

Reliability matters here because the game’s appeal depends on uninterrupted tension. Any action title built around pursuit feels less convincing when the player is repeatedly pulled away from the moment. I would therefore keep the phone’s normal background workload low before playing and close distractions that I do not need. That is sensible preparation for any mobile game, but it is particularly noticeable in a title where a brief loss of attention can change the outcome.

The current version is 5.4.21, and the game supports Android 7.0 or later. Those details make it accessible to a broad range of Android users, but compatibility alone should not be confused with identical play quality on every device. A phone that can install a game may still offer a less comfortable experience than a newer model with a brighter screen, stronger sustained performance, or more responsive touch input.

Who will enjoy it, and who should skip it

I would recommend it to someone who likes compact horror action games, chase scenes, and the uneasy feeling of turning a corner without knowing whether it is safe. It is also a good match for a player who wants an easily understood premise and does not mind repeating attempts to improve. The free entry point makes it simple to test the basic style before deciding whether optional purchases fit your habits.

I would be more cautious about recommending it to anyone looking for a calm, story-led horror experience. The emphasis is on surviving immediate danger, not on slowly examining clues or building a relationship with a cast of characters. It is also not my first choice for someone who dislikes being startled, feels uncomfortable with pursuit mechanics, or wants a game that can be enjoyed while frequently pausing.

Compared with a traditional mobile shooter, this game places more weight on fear and positioning than on a large competitive structure. Compared with a slower backrooms exploration title, it asks for faster reactions and gives the player a more active role in dealing with danger. That middle ground is its identity: it is not trying to be a full military shooter, and it is not simply a walking tour through an eerie environment.

The purchase model is worth considering before spending. The game is free, but individual in-app items can cost from $0.99 up to $99.99. I would begin without buying anything and first decide whether the chase loop itself holds my attention. Players who enjoy unlocking extras may see value in optional spending, while anyone trying to keep mobile gaming strictly free should be prepared to ignore purchase prompts rather than treating them as part of the core reason to install.

Practical ways to get more from each session

My first tip is to separate learning from winning. On an early attempt, I would focus on understanding how much space I need to turn and how quickly I can switch from movement to shooting. That makes later sessions less frantic because the basic hand movements become familiar before the pressure rises.

Second, I would avoid using the same escape habit every time. Repeating one turn may work briefly, but it also makes the route predictable to me: once that path becomes blocked or uncomfortable, I have no alternative. Trying a different direction during a low-pressure moment helps build a mental map and makes future chases less dependent on luck.

Third, I would play with the screen positioned so that my hands do not hide the areas I need to watch. This sounds minor, but touch controls and horror games compete for the same visual attention. A comfortable grip can help me react without covering too much of the action, especially during a sudden turn.

Fourth, I would treat sound and surroundings as part of the session rather than adding constant distractions. A quiet environment makes the atmosphere more effective, while a busy environment can make the game feel confusing. If I am playing in public, I would lower my expectations and choose shorter attempts instead of judging the title based on a session interrupted every few seconds.

Finally, I would keep spending separate from frustration. Losing a chase can make an optional purchase look tempting, but that is exactly when I would pause and decide whether the item improves enjoyment or merely promises relief from a bad attempt. The game is most convincing when I enjoy the movement and tension themselves, not when progress depends on reacting emotionally to failure.

Device expectations and everyday comfort

The Android 7.0 minimum makes this a practical option for people who are not using the newest phone. Even so, I would judge the experience by sustained comfort rather than installation alone. Long sessions can expose heat, battery drain, touch sensitivity, or display limitations that are not obvious during a quick test.

For an older device, I would begin with a short session and check whether the phone remains comfortable and responsive during repeated chases. If the experience feels fine at first but becomes less pleasant later, shorter play periods may be the better solution. A small screen can also make aiming and route awareness more demanding, so players with larger displays may find the action easier to read.

Recovery is another reason I like the game as a casual option. After a mistake, I can return with a specific adjustment rather than rebuilding a complicated character or remembering a long chain of objectives. That makes it approachable for a quick evening session, provided the player accepts that the main reward is improving at the chase rather than collecting a huge range of systems.

At the same time, I would not call it universally relaxing. The game may be easy to start, but its mood is designed to keep attention high. Someone wanting a low-energy way to unwind may prefer a puzzle, simulation, or quiet exploration game instead. The right device cannot change that basic emotional demand; it can only make the controls and visuals more comfortable.

My verdict after living with the format

Nextbots In Backrooms: Shooter succeeds because it understands its strongest idea and stays close to it: make the player feel pursued, then turn movement and quick decisions into the main source of tension. I enjoy it most in short, focused sessions where I can learn from a failed escape and immediately try a different approach.

Its limitations are just as clear. The narrow chase-and-shoot identity will not satisfy players searching for a deep campaign, a broad competitive ecosystem, or a slow mystery. The optional purchase range also means I would approach the free download with a spending limit in mind. Those are not reasons to dismiss it, but they are important when deciding whether it matches your habits.

HOOKAH GAMES has produced a free action game that is easy to pick up, recognizably built around backrooms horror, and capable of creating pressure without requiring a complicated explanation. With its Teen rating, wide Android compatibility, and large existing audience, it is a reasonable recommendation for players who want mobile horror with active survival decisions. I would install it for the chase, test it on my own device before committing to long sessions, and keep playing only if the tension feels exciting rather than exhausting.
