L.O.L. Surprise! Beauty Salon

I spent time with L.O.L. Surprise! Beauty Salon as a child-focused beauty and dress-up game, and my first impression was that it is built for quick, colorful play rather than long, demanding sessions. The concept is easy to understand: children can explore makeup, hairstyles, and manicures around the L.O.L. Surprise! theme. That makes it approachable for a young player who wants to start creating immediately instead of learning a complicated game system.

It is an educational game from Hippo Kids Games, although its learning value is informal rather than academic. Children practice choosing, sequencing, comparing colors, and following visual steps while they work through beauty activities. I would not install it as a replacement for a structured learning app, but it can turn a short waiting period into a creative activity with a little more decision-making than simply watching a video.

The game is free to install and is rated Everyone, which makes it a natural option for families looking for an accessible title. It has reached over 10 million installs and holds a 4.7 average from around 46 thousand ratings, so it clearly appeals to a large audience. Those figures do not tell me whether every child will enjoy it, but they do suggest that the basic format is easy for many families to understand.

How the beauty activities feel in everyday play

The strongest part of the experience is its immediate visual feedback. A child can choose a beauty direction, make changes, and see the character’s appearance develop without needing to understand a complicated menu structure. That matters for younger players, who can lose interest quickly if the first minute is spent searching through settings or reading instructions.

I found the makeup, hairstyle, and manicure themes useful as separate short activities. A child who is not interested in one area can move toward another instead of being locked into a single type of play. This variety also makes the game suitable for different moods: a quick manicure can fill a few minutes, while combining several beauty activities gives a longer creative session.

One practical way to use it is during a restaurant wait or while an adult is finishing a small household task. I would give the child a simple goal, such as creating a complete look and then explaining which choices were made. That changes the activity from passive tapping into a small storytelling exercise. It also gives the child a natural stopping point, which is helpful when screen time needs to end without an argument.

The game is not really about winning in the traditional sense. Its appeal comes from experimenting with appearance and seeing the result. Children who like imaginative play, dolls, fashion, and visual customization are likely to understand the attraction immediately. Children who prefer racing, puzzles with clear answers, or action may find the beauty-salon format too quiet and repetitive.

Speed expectations on ordinary devices

In my experience, the important speed question here is not whether the game can deliver complex action, but whether a child can move from one choice to the next without feeling held up. The activities are visually focused and generally suited to short interactions. That makes the title feel lighter than a large open-world game or a 3D action game with many moving elements.

There is also a benefit to the simple structure: a young player does not need to keep track of a large map, several characters, or a long chain of objectives. Fewer layers usually mean less mental friction. When a child opens the game for a brief session, the time is spent on the salon activities instead of remembering where they left off in a complicated adventure.

That said, perceived speed can change depending on the phone or tablet. Older hardware may take longer to open a colorful game than a newer device, and a nearly full device can make any app feel less responsive. I would not judge the title solely by how quickly it starts on one particular handset. The more useful test is whether the child can select tools, complete an action, and continue without repeated interruptions.

A small but useful habit is to close unrelated apps before handing over the device, especially if the child is using an older phone. This is not a special requirement of the game; it is simply a sensible way to leave more room for a colorful interactive app. I would also avoid starting it when the device is already struggling with several background tasks, because a child notices hesitation more than an adult does.

What happens during longer or heavier sessions

The most demanding moments are likely to be the parts where several visual elements are active at once: changing a look, moving through multiple beauty steps, or switching repeatedly between activities. These moments are still much less demanding than a modern action game, but they can reveal whether a low-end device is comfortable with the presentation.

For a short session, I would expect the game to be a reasonable fit for a family device that meets its stated minimum operating-system requirement of Android 5.1. That requirement makes it accessible to older Android hardware, but an operating-system number alone does not guarantee a smooth experience on every device. Hardware age, available storage, and the condition of the system remain important.

My practical advice is to watch the child’s experience rather than chase a technical ideal. If taps register naturally, transitions do not interrupt the activity, and the device does not become unusually warm, the game is doing its job. If the child starts tapping repeatedly because the screen appears stuck, the problem may be the device rather than the salon concept, and a restart is worth trying before deciding that the game is unsuitable.

Longer sessions can also expose a different kind of performance issue: attention fatigue. The activities are varied within the beauty theme, but they do not provide the constant escalation found in an action game. For younger children, that can be positive because the pace is calmer. For older children, the same calm pace may feel limited after the novelty of the characters and tools wears off.

Reliability, interruptions, and recovering play

Reliability matters more in a children’s game than many adults expect. A child may not know how to recover from a frozen screen, an accidental exit, or a confusing purchase prompt. I therefore prefer to test the game at the beginning of a session, rather than handing it over just as a child is becoming impatient.

The current version is 1.6.5, and keeping the app updated is a sensible way to receive the developer’s latest compatibility work. I would still make sure the device has enough free space and that the operating system is not in the middle of an update. These are ordinary maintenance steps, but they reduce the chances of a session being disrupted by the device itself.

If the game stops responding, my recovery order would be simple: leave the app, reopen it, and restart the device if the problem continues. I would not repeatedly tap the screen, because that can turn one delayed action into several unwanted selections once the interface catches up. With a young child, explaining this as “give it a moment, then reopen it” is more useful than letting frustration build.

I also recommend supervising the first few sessions. The content rating is Everyone, but a child-friendly rating does not remove the need for an adult to understand how the game is used. Supervision helps with navigation, prevents accidental purchases, and shows whether the child is enjoying the creative choices or simply tapping through them.

The game includes in-app purchases priced from $0.99 to $19.99 per item. That is the main area where adult involvement is important. I would review the purchase controls before giving the device to a child and make the rule clear: free play first, and no purchase without asking. This is especially important because children may see a desirable beauty item as part of the play experience rather than as a separate transaction.

Device constraints and choosing the right audience

The Android requirement of 5.1 makes the game suitable for a broad range of older devices, but I would be cautious about using a very old phone with limited storage or a tired battery. A game can technically install and still feel unpleasant if the device is slow, crowded, or constantly displaying system warnings. A tablet with a larger screen may be more comfortable for small hands than a compact phone, particularly during detailed manicure or makeup interactions.

Resource demands are best judged in practical terms here. This is not the kind of title I would choose to test a flagship phone’s gaming power. Its emphasis is on themed visual activities, not high-speed competition. That makes it a better candidate for a shared family tablet than a demanding console-style mobile game, provided the tablet is maintained and the child has enough room to interact comfortably.

Battery behavior is another reason to keep sessions sensible. Any screen-based activity consumes power, and children may not notice that a device is nearly empty while concentrating on a look. I would start a longer salon session with a reasonable charge and avoid using the game as a distraction when the device is needed for an important call or journey.

Families should also consider the child’s developmental fit. The Everyone rating is reassuring for broad suitability, but age labels do not tell me whether the pace, reading demands, and creative freedom match a particular child. A younger child may need help with navigation and purchase boundaries. An older child may want more goals, competition, or progression than this format appears designed to provide.

This is where the usual alternatives become relevant. A general drawing app offers more open-ended creativity, while a puzzle game provides clearer right-or-wrong feedback. A fashion game aimed at older players may offer deeper styling systems, but it can also be more complicated. This salon game sits between those choices: more guided than free drawing, gentler than competitive play, and simpler than a large fashion simulator.

Three ways to get more from the game

My first tip is to treat each completed look as a small design challenge. Instead of allowing random selections, ask the child to choose a color theme or a character personality first. The child can then explain how the hairstyle, makeup, and manicure match that idea. This adds language practice and planning without turning the game into a lesson.

My second tip is to use a short activity as a transition tool. For example, a child can finish one manicure before leaving the house, or complete a hairstyle while waiting for dinner. Because the game is divided around recognizable beauty actions, it is easier to set a natural endpoint than with an endless video feed. I would avoid promising “just one minute,” but I would agree on one completed task before starting.

My third tip is to compare two looks rather than chasing a perfect one. Ask which choices feel brighter, calmer, or more suitable for a pretend event. This encourages observation and personal taste. It also reduces the pressure to find one correct answer, which is important because the appeal of the game comes from creative choice rather than a single winning solution.

A fourth useful approach is to let the child lead while the adult asks questions instead of taking over. If a child struggles with a control, show the gesture once and hand the device back. The game works best when the child feels responsible for the result. Adult help should make the interface accessible, not turn the activity into an adult-designed project.

Who should choose it, and who should skip it

I would recommend it to families seeking a free, approachable beauty-themed game for a young child who enjoys dolls, styling, and visual makeovers. It is especially suitable when the goal is a calm, short activity that can be understood quickly. The broad age rating and familiar L.O.L. Surprise! identity make it easy to introduce to a child already interested in that world.

I would be more cautious if the child becomes upset by optional purchases, has difficulty stopping an open-ended activity, or expects every game to contain levels and clear rewards. In those cases, a fully offline drawing tool or a puzzle game with a defined finish may be easier for the family to manage. I would also skip it for a player looking for action, strategy, multiplayer competition, or advanced character development.

Parents who dislike in-app purchase systems should pay close attention before installation and during the first use. The free entry point is helpful, but the available item prices mean that the adult should establish boundaries rather than assume a child will understand the difference between choosing an item and buying one. That is not a reason to reject the game automatically, but it is a real part of using it responsibly.

Another trade-off is replay value. The beauty theme offers room for repeated experimentation, but the experience depends on the child enjoying self-directed styling. A child who loves making several different looks may return often. A child who needs new story chapters, increasingly difficult challenges, or competitive goals may move on quickly.

My performance verdict

After weighing the quick-start design, the gentle beauty activities, and the practical demands of older Android devices, I see this as a lightweight-feeling creative game rather than a technically ambitious one. Its speed is most convincing when the device is in good condition and the session stays focused. Its strongest performance quality is not spectacle; it is the ability to keep the interaction understandable for a young player.

The game is also forgiving in how it can be used. It can fill a few quiet minutes, support a longer pretend salon session, or become a prompt for talking about colors and choices. That flexibility is more valuable to me than a long list of features. At the same time, families should manage purchases, supervise the first sessions, and avoid expecting the depth of a full fashion simulator.

Hippo Kids Games has made a clear, accessible option for children who want makeup, hairstyles, and manicures in a playful L.O.L. Surprise! setting. I would install it for a child who enjoys visual customization and needs a simple activity that does not demand fast reflexes. I would choose something else for a child seeking complex goals or for a family that wants a completely purchase-free experience.

Overall, L.O.L. Surprise! Beauty Salon earns my recommendation as a focused children’s styling game, with the strongest results on a reasonably maintained phone or tablet and under sensible adult supervision. The free price makes it easy to try, while the Everyone rating keeps the audience broad. Just approach it for what it is: a colorful creative salon experience with short-session appeal, not a deep educational course or a demanding game built around progression.
